The Big Changes in the Creator Economy

The Creator Economy in a Nutshell.

Hey there! This is Bryan Dijkhuizen from Medium, NewsBreak, and other writing platforms.

This will be the last edition of The Daily Needle before Christmas. In every edition, I try to inspire you with the latest interesting ideas and tools you have to know before it's 2023.

The Creator Economy

It's been a weird couple of years.

After the COVID-19 pandemic hit us all, the world started to shift in shape. There were so many people panicking over their life, their job, and their futures that everybody started thinking about how they wanted to have their lives altogether.

It turned out that more and more people are starting their own businesses.

Writing, or working online is more popular than ever and things are quickly moving in the community. Web3 (Blockchain) is going to be a big player in the near future for content creators.

But also the traditional (web2) writing platforms are still booming. Examples are Substack, Medium, and Newsbreak.

New CEO at Medium.com

This was a big shock for me when I heard it.

Ev Williams, the founder of the platform stepped down as CEO and made Tony Stubblebine the new head of Medium.

This is one of the paragraphs from his opening statement.

"The first thing to know about me is that I place a tremendous value on listening and open discussion. Good thing Medium is the perfect platform for that. You will find me to be a very active participant in the community, as I have been from the start."

And since Tony has been presented as the new CEO, things have changed. We now have:

  • Tipping.

  • Some people are getting paid for external views now (testing I believe)

  • Curation is slowly fading away from the Machine Learning models and more towards human review.

We trust Tony because he's one of us. He's a writer, an author, an editor, and a publisher.

Did you know that Medium offers memberships for only $5? You can use the referral link that will give me 50% of your fee (without charging you anything extra).
